On January 30, 2010 the Iago Junior High students competed in the District 29-AA UIL contest.  The students and faculty have been preparing for this competition since early November.  The hard work has paid off as Iago took first place in both the Sixth Grade division and the Seventh and Eighth Grade division. 

The writing events were held on January 6, 2010 under the direction of Brenda Humberson.  She served as the coach for both Ready Writing and Editorial Writing.  In 6th grade Ready Writing, Harold Taylor took 6th place. In 8th grade Ready Writing, Emily Wilkins took 1st place, and Hannah Kulak took 3rd place. In 7th grade Editorial Writing Gabby Alcala took 1st place, Emili Storey took 2nd place, Tyler Wittig took 5th place. In 8th grade Editorial Writing, Spencer Gutierrez took 1st place, and Kristen Hanka took 4th place.
 


 

All speech events took place January 28, 2010, at the Iago campus.  These events include Oral Reading, Modern Oratory, and Impromptu Speaking. 

Sara Harborth sponsors the Oral Reading events.  In 6th grade, Melina Moore took 1st place, Kaylor Rolf took 3rd place, and Harold Taylor took 4th place.  In 7th grade, Ellie Forgason took 1st place, Karli Seymour took 3rd place, and Peyton Metting took 6th place.  In 8th grade, Emily Wilkins took 1st place, and Hannah Kulak took 5th place. 

Sarah Harborth also sponsors Modern Oratory. Kirsten Miller took 1st place, and Alvaro Beltran took 2nd place. 

Ashly Macek sponsors Impromptu Speaking. Sheigh Thompson took 2nd place, Kylie Vega took 3rd place, and Cynthia Kulak took 4th place. 

Gay Joines is the Art Sponsor.  In 6th grade, Claire Winkenwerder took 1st place, Sierra Ganske took 2nd place, Maggie Merecka took 3rd place, Kate Cheney took 4th place, and Anah Voulgaris took 5th place.  In 7th grade, Jena Herndon took 1st place, and Kortlan Bell and Elijah Krushall tied for 2nd place.  In 8th grade, Kyla Lockley took 1st place, Erin Torres took 2nd place, and Megan Munoz and Jessica Taylor tied for 4th place.
 


 

Bobbie Peter is the coach for Calculator Applications.  In 6th grade, Myrissa Sanchez took 1st place, and Kaylor Rolf took 5th place.  In 7th grade, Karli Seymour took 1st place, and Makayla Hobbs took 5th place.  In 8th grade, Caleb Winkenwerder took 1st place. 

Kristye Jessen sponsors Dictionary Skills.  In 6th grade, Crystal Hargrove took 1st place, Samantha Flores took 5th place, and Melina Moore tied for 6th place. In 7th grade, Tyler Mann took 1st place, Amanda Casey took 3rd place, and Deanna Bourg took 5th place.  In 8th grade, Stephanie Ramirez took 4th place. 

Carol Simpson sponsors Listening Skills.  In 6th grade Emilio Ramirez took 1st place, Leslie Gonzalez tied for 2nd place, and Adrian Jimenez took 5th place.  In 7th grade, Royrick Jackson took 2nd place.  In 8th grade, Irving Olvera took 2nd place, and Nicholas Rodriguez took 6th place. 

Heather Faust sponsors Maps, Graphs, and Charts.  In 6th grade, Hailey Harborth took 1st place, and Britney Casey took 5th place.  In 7th grade, Jesus Gonzalez took 6th place.  In 8th grade, Ryan Moreno took 6th place. 

Holly Wittig sponsors Mathematics. In 7th grade, Gabby Alcala took 1st place, Tyler Wittig took 2nd place, and Fatima Baca took 4th place.  In 8th grade, Shayelynn Chaka took 1st place, Kindra Hlavinka took 3rd place, and Arminda Rodriguez took 4th place. 

Fred Drennan sponsors Music Memory.  In 6th grade, Mia Hernandez took 3rd place, and Adrian Arvizu took 6th place. 

Dana Kulak sponsors Number Sense. In 6th grade, Gale Penrice and Daniel Montgomery tied for 2nd place, and Brandon Barrera took 4th place.  In 7th grade, Bianca Camacho took 1st place, and Jessica Boerger took 3rd place.  In 8th grade, Joey Gmitter took 1st place, Benjamin Merecka took 2nd place, and Dillon Baumgarten took 3rd place. 

Janice Raska sponsors Science I and Science II.  In Science I, Emili Storey and Brooke Wallace tied for 4th place.  In Science II, Caleb Frankum took 3rd place. 

Donna Kubesch sponsors Spelling.  In 6th grade, Jamie Macek took 2nd place, Allison Hobbs took 4th place, and Carmen Robles took 5th place.  In 7th grade, Kyle Smith took 2nd place, Adrian Alameda took 3rd place, and Naomi Simmons took 4th place.  In 8th grade, Spencer Gutierrez took 1st place, Cynthia Duarte took 2nd place, and Kristen Hanka took 3rd place. 

Sammie Zahradnik sponsors Social Studies.  In 6th grade, Dakota Watson took 1st place, Rebekah Hardee took 2nd place, and Justin Joyce took 4th place.  In 7th/8th grade, Dylan Toomes took 2nd place and Walker Monroe took 4th place.
